A new page, and I'm still finding my rhythm
My first note from here and a small favour to ask of you.
So. Here I am.
New platform, blank page, cursor blinking at me the way a cursor does when it knows you don’t quite know what you want to say yet. I’ve written a lot in my life, but mainly clinical reports, research, systematic reviews, magazine columns, protocols and my social media captions but not much of proper personal heartfelt blogs. Yet sitting down to write the first thing here feels oddly like the first day of school. I keep straightening the pens on the desk and searching for distractions.
I’ll be honest with you: I don’t fully know what this space is going to become. And I’ve decided that’s alright. Maybe even the point.
For years I’ve written for people. For patients, in language careful enough to be precise and warm enough to be human. For clinicians, in the formal register the journals demand. For the algorithm, in hooks and carousels and the strange compressed grammar of social media, where you’ve got about a second and a half before someone’s thumb moves on. All of that has its place, and I’m proud of a lot of it. But none of it is quite this.
“This is the room where I get to think out loud.”
Here I want to write the way I actually talk and the way I’d talk to you if we were sitting across a table in The Hague or London with a coffee going cold between us because the conversation got good. Longer thoughts. Half-formed ones, sometimes. The science, yes… always the science, because that’s who I am and I won’t water it down for you. But also the stories underneath it. Why I care about any of this. What Brazil taught me about light and food and rhythm long before I had the vocabulary for it. What I’m reading, what I’m changing my mind about, what the wellness world keeps getting wrong and why it matters.
I’m still finding my voice in this particular room. That’s the truthful bit. It might take me a few posts to stop sounding like I’m giving a lecture and start sounding like me. Bear with me while I figure it out. I’d rather begin honestly and imperfect than wait until it’s polished and never begin at all.
Which brings me to the favour
Many of you have followed me for a long time on the old newsletter, on Instagram, at a conference somewhere, or through the work itself. You’ve read the columns. You’ve watched the reels. Some of you have been patients. You know my world already: circadian rhythms, sleep, the gut microbiome, chrononutrition, the messy beautiful place where all of them meet.
So before I go too far in one direction, I want to hear from you.
What do you actually want more of? What’s the thing you keep wishing I’d go deeper on? The topic I mention in passing on Instagram and then never fully unpack because thirty seconds isn’t enough? What’s missing from the newsletter, from the social feeds, from the conversation as it stands? Where do you feel underserved, not just by me, but by the whole field?
Because that’s what I want this space to be for. Not a broadcast. A conversation. You tell me where it hurts, where you’re curious, where you feel fobbed off with wellness clichés, and I’ll bring the rigour and the depth and the real answers and the ones that don’t fit in a caption. I might not have all the answers but at least we can start a discovery journey together.
Reply. Comment. One word is enough. I'm genuinely reading every one.
Tell me you want the truth about morning light, or magnesium, or why you wake at 3am, or whether any of the gut-sleep supplements are worth your money. Tell me you want less jargon, or more. Tell me what you’re tired of hearing everyone else say.
Here’s the thing I keep coming back to, in the clinic and in my own life:
“Health isn’t built through control. It’s remembered through rhythm.”
I think the same might be true of writing — of showing up here, again and again, until the rhythm finds itself.
So this is me, showing up. Page one.
Thank you for being here at the start. Let’s find the shape of this together.
